“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Yes, we are squeezing the truth of Hebrews 4:12 very hard. It takes us to school on dealing with a hard heart, which keeps the Christian from the enjoyment of God’s way of thinking and living (4:11). The human will which is set in cement in resistance to God’s revelation is ugly and awful in its consequences. The Word of God has a supernatural capacity for discerning our thoughts and intentions. It performs a sifting process. It will reveal what is in our hearts. It is as one writer says, “. . . If we really want to understand ourselves, we must fill our souls with God’s Word” (Kent Hughes). If your Bible has dust on it, that is not a good sign. What or whom are we trusting, fearing, listening to, and depending on; what or whom are we serving in life (Matt. 6:24)? All this is to say, do I have a serious approach to the Scriptures? Do I have a set-aside niche where I discover what the text of Scripture means and how it applies to me?

Hard questions: Am I spending more time scrolling on my IPhone than in being a wisdom-searcher?
Is my church assisting me in mining for the gold of truth by which to live?
