“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, be on the alert. We have an adversary. He has power, is a schemer, and can easily deceive the unwary. One of his devices** is to present God to the soul as one made up all of mercy. Our sin only makes God’s mercy more meaningful to us. Why then should you make such a matter of sin? Remedy #1 – Sin sets us out on a journey from which there is no return. Sin is always the worse thing we can do. It hardens the heart and creates greater indifference to sin (Hos. 4:17). God’s “So be it” to our choice of sin is a judgment we can’t afford. Remedy#2 – “God is as just as He is merciful.” The god of our making will prove to be a fiction. God cast the angels out of heaven (2 Pet. 2:4). He turned Adam out of Paradise. Remedy #3 – That though God’s general mercy be over all his works, yet his special mercy is confined to those that are divinely qualified. Are you in tune with God’s mercy? Is it sweet to you because you have tasted the goodness of God? Remedy #4 – God’s mercy is an antioxidant that should be in our spiritual diet. The mercy of God should keep us from sin, not drive us to sin. Satan’s logic is to argue from mercy to sinful liberty.

Reflections:
Have there been times when you have pleaded for mercy when repentance was necessary?
