“And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it.” Mark 4:4, 15

In 1963 Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, “The Birds,” changed the way many thought about birds. A couple purchased two love birds that became fond of one another. The birds started attacking children and a huge assault started on the town by attacking birds. Jesus, in the parable of the seed and the sower, described how the seed of the message of the kingdom fell on unwelcome soil. Thin soil on top of rock resulted in the seed of the Word becoming bird food. Later Jesus said that the birds symbolized Satan who removed the seed. The point was that of a person who hears the message and fails to understand. The message of the kingdom produced no response. Satan has his agents who assist in the work of deception (Mk. 3:22; Matt. 7:13-15). False teachers and godless religion can blind hearers of the kingdom message. Satan stands ready to pick the seed of the truth off the surface of the heart. This will happen when we think that Jesus is something He is not.

Reflections:
Ask God to make you a more faithful seed-sower. Don’t be discouraged. God is the one who can overcome the hearts that resist the gospel.
