The Great Pretender

“And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.” Mark 13:21

Before Jesus Christ comes again Satan will attempt to deceive God’s elect. On the Wednesday before His crucifixion on Friday, Jesus responded to questions from His disciples. In one of the most important prophetic passages in the Bible Jesus told His men that the Temple in Jerusalem they admired would be destroyed. That event, through a double reference (Lk. 21:20-24, a destruction in 70 A.D.) forewarned of the dark and dangerous time of the Great Tribulation of the last days. False Christs and false prophets will try to make believers (the elect) think that the Messiah has come and the kingdom has dawned. This great delusion reminds us of Satan’s schemes to use pretenders, like the devil himself, who dress up lies to look like the truth. We can see this not only within a false Christianity, but also in politicians who distort the Scriptures to promote their own political ambitions. Promises of peace and prosperity in a make-believe utopia on earth appeal to those who are already self-deceived. However, it is the cross and the empty tomb that announce a coming day of judgment upon human fists raised in the face of a holy God.

Reflection:
Are you able to name some of those systems of thought or religions which are deceiving people?
What is especially deceptively appealing to many in our nation?
