“Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?” Lamentations 3:37–38

Is God in complete control of His plan or is He not? Without the anchorage of God’s absolute and final control over all the universe, we are without meaning for our existence. Our secular age, with its disinterest in God, has no basis for putting the pieces of the puzzle of life together. When Jeremiah wrote Lamentations Israel was being crushed by the cruelty of mighty Babylon. The temple and all hopes attached to it were going up in smoke. In the words of a Study Bible on Lamentations 3:37-38; “!All that happens is by God’s word (Gen. 1:3), calamity as well good (Amos 3:6).” His sovereign will cannot be frustrated, supremely evidenced in the cross of Christ (Acts 2:23). His sovereign will includes everything, even the thoughts of world leaders (Prov. 21:1). His sovereign will cannot be known in advance (“secret will”) (Deut. 29:29), two exceptions: prophecy (Amos 3:7) and the ultimate destiny of the saved and the lost. His sovereign will is perfect. God makes no mistakes. All our “why” questions ultimately must have the same answer. Our loving God in His sovereign wisdom willed it so. There is more to be said about God’s sovereignty. “He is sovereign, there can be no unforeseen circumstances, no accidents. As He is sovereign there can be no breakdown in authority, and as He is omnipotent there can be no want of power to achieve His chosen ends. God is sufficient unto Himself for all these things.” A. W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy.

Reflection:
Are there circumstances in your life, past or present, which give you difficulty in humbling yourself before the sovereignty of God?
