“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

The text tells us that our adversary desires for us to fall into pride and a self-sufficient attitude. How might he go about this? Device:** By painting sins with virtue’s colors. Think of all the virtue signaling that fills our social environment. Pride is painted over with so-called strength and an unwavering moral posture. Covetousness is painted with assertiveness. Defiance of authority is gilded over with free-spiritedness and valor. No moral standards go about as tolerance. Remedy (1). Look past the colorful exterior. Sin is no less filthy because it is painted over with pretty colors. Remedy (2). Remember that make-up is not for the beautiful. How easily rotted wood can be painted over to look attractive. Remedy (3). View sin as it will look in a few hours. You know that the pleasure of sin will quickly wear off – what will you be left with? Remedy (4). Consider Christ’s sufferings and let them arouse rage within you toward sin.

Reflections:
What psychological terms can be used to cover over or redefine sinful patterns (e.g. boundaries)?
